The cyber attack prompted Port Phillip Prison management to suspend prisoner visits and bolster security in the jail that holds 1,000 inmates.

A spokesperson for Port Phillip's operator, G4S, confirmed there had been a cyber security incident.

Victoria Police is now investigating the cyber security incident and according to the Herald Sun, the malicious cyber actors behind the attack have demanded a ransom.

Prisoner visits, both in person and via video, have been suspended in recent days. Some phone access at the prison have also been restricted but essential calls can be arranged. Professional visits are also being made possible.

According to the G4S spokesperson, Corrections Victoria is currently working with G4S to ensure these issues are resolved as quickly as possible.

"There has been no impact on the safety and security of staff and prisoners," the G4S spokesperson added.

The jail at Truganina is not regarded as being in lockdown.

According to the Herald Sun, management has taken steps to bolster security and the safety of staff and detainees.

Victoria Police and the state government's Cyber Incident Response Team have been notified.
