The Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) has opened a new Training Security Operations Centre (TSOC) in what is an Australian-first for cyber security skill training.
The $1.1 million project gives students the chance to combat lifelike cyber threats in a virtual classroom with a cloud-based security operations centre.
Tony Marceddo, general manager of Vault Cloud and co-chair of AustCyber ACT Node Advisory Board, said, “CIT is leading the way with implementing education and training pathways to help address the critical issue of growing and upskilling our cyber security workforce.”
The ACT government contributed $700,000 to the facility, which will serve as a leading-edge training point in an industry that is estimated to create 20,000 jobs over the next decade.
Member for Brindabella Mick Gentleman launched the TSOC and said it highlighted Canberra's focus on growing the industry.
"The addition of the TSOC will enhance student experience with a simulated workplace for real-world skills development. Integral to the facility is the interactive virtual cyber security platform Penteract, created local firm by Fifth Domain, which is designed to simulate real cyber security threats," Gentleman said.
"The TSOC further positions the ACT as the driver of contemporary cyber security training both nationally and globally. Capability within the facility will allow start-ups to showcase and test their new products to clients and will help future-proof government and business through the upskilling of employees in cyber security training."
The TSOC facility is funded by AustCyber and the ACT government and is a collaboration between CIT, Nova Systems, Fifth Domain and ANU.
Owen Pierce of the Industry Growth Centre AustCyber said the initiative is being recognised by a number of students enrolling in CIT's cyber programs.
“CIT has demonstrated their willingness to work with broad section of TAFEs nationally to ensure that they are collectively training the future-ready cyber security workforce that Australian employers need. AustCyber is a proud supporter of CIT and is thrilled to be involved in the development of their Training Security Operations Centre," Pierce said.
CIT have already trained 168 students since March 2018, and has fast-tracked curriculum development.
