These concerns were exacerbated by a reported increase in malicious activity online since the beginning of the pandemic, with some 39 per cent of respondents finding that attempted malware penetrations have increased.

Despite the growing threat of malware, the process by which companies identify the presence of malware or attacks by malicious actors remains largely unchanged. According to the survey’s findings, companies still continue to utilise automated malware detection software among additional supporting technologies, despite acknowledging the continued threat of malware.

Interestingly, the survey found that 15 per cent of organisations admitted to “a serious breach or compromise at a frequency of once a month or more”.

Indeed, the survey also demonstrates a growing concern for the use of the cyber domain in online warfare, noting that double the number of respondents “describe nation-state groups as the threat actor they’re most concerned about” on last year.
