AFP confirms no cyber attack behind outage

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has confirmed that an issue with its email sends was, in fact, not the result of a cyber attack but what it called a “technical difficulty”.

Concerns that the AFP had suffered a cyber attack first occurred when subscribers to the AFP’s media releases were repeatedly sent emails containing news and reports from the AFP.

“We experienced a technical issue with our media release distribution service, which resulted in the repeated sending of media releases to our subscriber list,” said the AFP.

The AFP added that at the same time, it was conducting essential maintenance on its website overnight, which would explain why its site may have been suffering outages for some trying to access it.

While the AFP is still unaware of the reason its subscribers were repeatedly sent releases via email, it has confirmed that a cyber attack was not to blame.

“While we are investigating the exact cause, we can confirm it was not due to the result of malicious cyber activity. No personal details were compromised,” said the AFP.

“We apologise for the inconvenience.”

Cyber Daily has not observed any signs of outages on the AFP website or received repeated press releases, suggesting that not all AFP email subscribers were affected.
