Hackers launch a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack against the Australian embassy to Israel’s website, to little effect.
A Bangladeshi hacking collective has targeted the website of the Australian embassy to Israel, boasting of having taken the site offline.
A group calling itself The Anonymous BD – apparently short for Anonymous Bangladesh – made the claim on its Telegram channel on the evening of 20 January. A link to Check-host.net was included in the initial post to prove the attack happened, alongside the hashtags #Opisrael and #Opindia, as well as anti-Israel commentary.
The group made two more posts within 20 minutes, again boasting that the site was down. However, the site appeared fine not long after, suggesting that any disruption actually caused was relatively fleeting.
The group itself has been active on Telegram since February 2023, when it created its account, though the earliest post is dated 30 September 2023, when the group began to target Indian websites with website defacement and DDoS attacks.
On 8 October, however, the group joined many other hacktivist collectives in targeting Israel and the countries supporting it in its war against Hamas. Anonymous BD shared a post from another hacking group, Mysterious Team Bangladesh, laying out its general aims.
“Urgent call for all Hackers, Human Right Organisations and Activists all around the world to unite again and start campaign [sic] against Israel,” the post read.
“We condemn the disrespect to our Brothers in Palestine, illegal Israeli settlements in the 1948-occupied territories in response to Israel’s atrocities against Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Palestinian people. The operation is not over! We will continue Attack.”
Since then, Anonymous BD has actively targeted numerous Israeli websites with DDoS attacks and has claimed several data breaches of Indian organisations. The group has shared some of its DDoS scripting and appears to be actively providing support to other hackers.
The group has claimed several other DDoS attacks in the meantime, but all the targeted sites remain in operation, including cyber security news website The Cyber Express and the Tel Aviv Airport.
