The Australian Federal Police’s Operation Aquila assisted in the campaign against the most prolific ransomware operator in the world.
As more information comes to light on just how completely the LockBit ransomware gang has been taken apart, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) has revealed the part it played in the Europol-led operation.
The AFP was just one part of the operation, which saw law enforcement agencies from 10 countries work together to disrupt the ransomware-as-a-service operation.
Not only have some of LockBit’s members been arrested, and others charged and now wanted for arrest, but the operation also included taking down the gang’s main darknet platform, as well 34 servers from all over the world – including Australia.
The AFP and the Australian Signals Directorate’s Operation Aquila – stood up in 2022 to combat cyber crime, especially ransomware – assisted with criminal investigations, disruption activities, and target development.
AFP Assistant Commissioner Scott Lee praised the operation as “a significant breakthrough in the global fight against cyber crime”.
“Cyber crime is not restricted by borders, and tackling this crime type requires a united, global response from law enforcement,” Assistant Commissioner Lee said in a statement.
“This latest takedown is yet another example of the powerful outcomes that can be achieved through a united law enforcement front.
“This investigation has not only taken down the world’s most prolific ransomware group but also damaged the group’s reputation and credibility beyond repair.
“We have obtained a vast amount of data from investigations so far and will continue to follow all leads and bring those responsible to justice.”
