Email security outfit Proofpoint has announced a round of global lay-offs, trimming its workforce around the globe by 280 people.

The company has said that it is moving half the jobs to offices in Ireland and Argentina. The lay-offs will impact 6 per cent of Proofpoint’s 4,500 employees.

“This decision was not taken lightly, and it is deeply rooted in our forward-looking company strategy of aligning our investments and hiring to our strategic priorities, expanding our operational footprint by leveraging a global talent pool, and streamlining our organisation with fewer management layers,” a company spokesperson said of the lay-offs in a widely reported statement.

There are no solid details on where the lay-offs are coming from, but it is being reported that about 20 of those impacted come from the company’s Israeli offices.

“Some of the positions under consultation are in Israel, and we are being sensitive to the current situation in the country,” a company spokesperson told Calcalist, an Israeli financial news outlet. “Proofpoint will offer extended departure terms for Israeli employees who will be impacted.”

Proofpoint has acquired four Israeli firms since 2019; it was itself acquired by US private equity firm Thoma Bravo in 2021 for US$12.3 billion.

Since then, the company has seen a veritable revolving door of chief executives. The current CEO, Sumit Dhawan, has only been in the role for two months.

Proofpoint has an Australian office in Sydney. Cyber Daily contacted a local Proofpoint representative to ascertain if the layoffs would affect Australian employees, however, Proofpoint did not comment directly on the matter.

UPDATED 02/02/24 to add Proofpoint's response to Australian layoffs.
