Cloud infrastructure company SoftIron has demonstrated its AUKUS Sovereign Tactical Edge Cloud (ASTEC) to politicians in Canberra as part of the technology’s official launch.

ASTEC is a single, stackable hardware solution that can provide secure and scalable storage and compute power in challenging environments and deployments. It comes in a 10U ruggedised case rated for protection against vibration, shock, water, and sand, with eight server nodes inside a further 2U of space for components such as extra cabling or encryption hardware.

SoftIron showed off ASTEC in operation with a cloud environment shared between Australia, the US, and the UK at an event at Parliament House, with Senator James Paterson, shadow minister for defence Andrew Hastie, former prime minister Scott Morrison, and Arthur Sinodinos, former ambassador to the US.

“At the heart of ASTEC is HyperCloud, an integrated platform which simplifies the delivery of private cloud by taking a highly opinionated approach to deployment across the entire stack from hardware provisioning to tenancy management,” said SoftIron chief operating officer Jason Van der Schyff.

“ASTEC’s architecture has the potential to deliver a combination of performance, flexibility and simplicity in deployment and operation that surpasses any known capability currently in use, ultimately removing the barriers to fast and consistent deployments of on-the-ground cloud services.”
